The very first project DJ Lanphier ever produced and directed was a music video for the classic hip hop group Maroon.
“We shot on film – 16mm B&W and Super 8 color – and had about $1000 for the entire budget from shoot to post, which was barely enough to shoot for one day.
Over half the budget went to buy film and rent a van, the other half paid for the cameras, developing and food. When you watch the video, there’s a scene
towards the end where Martin is counting money. It was literally both a prop and lunch money for the entire crew. We hustled around Morningside Heights
grabbing shots at a half dozen locations until we ran out of daylight. It was a lot of fun. It came out really nice. Martin did a hell of a job editing it. If I knew then what I know now.”
Maroon’s album The Funky Record was a critical hit and made Rolling Stone music critic Robert Cristigau’s Best of Pazz and Jop 1988 list in the Village Voice and is
included in his book “Guide to the Music of the 80′s”.
Maroon was rapper Emcee Will EP and songwriter and producer Martin Kierszenbaum, who now heads A&R at Interscope Records and is
president of CherryTree Records, home of Sting and many others.
