Brother Daniel has a rather thoughtful post over at Orthodox Anarchist on hatred. It seems to be a topic of growing concern in the blogsphere these days. The outright hatred and the calls for violence have gotten out of hand.
Case in point, Glenn Greenwald looks at an article by Walter Williams that calls for the nuclear annihilation of certain Middle Eastern civilian populations in order to win the Global War on Terror, War Against Violent Extremism, The Long War. Glenn explains:
Williams points out that we could easily “annihilate” Iran or Syria with nuclear weapons launched from submarines. He then claims that the Great Generation of World War II would have done so already, but laments the tragic fact that we are deterred from doing this by what he calls the “handwringing about the innocent lives lost, so-called collateral damage” [...] Like all lovers of the Western way of life, Williams blames the free press for these threats to our freedoms: “Our adversaries in the Middle East have advantages that the axis powers didn’t have — the Western press and public opinion.” After spilling his nuclear annihilation fantasies out in the open, Williams pays lip service to the idea that we should at least think a little bit before eradicating entire countries — “I’m not suggesting that we rush to use our nuclear capacity to crush states that support terrorism” — but there is little doubt about what he is advocating.
Go read the entire post and then tell me that your monkey tail doesn’t start to twitch.
Some on the right have completely and utterly gone over the edge. No doubt about it. And, the news cycles of Armegeddon talk, which are still out there from time to time, are just absoulutely off the rails.
Speaking of which… I missed the Muslim “doomsday” on August 22. Did the world end? I’ll go to the next one. Just too busy with reality to deal with propaganda ginned up to stoke the fires of fear on our shores, a cocktail all too many are willing to suck down with a side of shit for brains.
