Aditya Dasgupta at the Foreign Policy blog is wondering what happened with the apocalypse that so many on the right were saying was imminent. (That word again.) (c/o Think Progress)
Are people who use such fears so blatantly actual true beleivers or just stupid? A little of both no doubt. Given the propensity for so many conservatives to mix reality with fantasy, you’d think this one would be a gimme. Well, okay, granted there isn’t that much to glean from Battlestar Gallactica…
Haven’t they seen Apocalypse Now? It’s right at the beginning for pete’s sake:
The Katrina “anniversary” segments are all over TV and the internet. And, I thought that if we were to remember something, it should be all the people who lost their lives.
Clarence “Gatemouth” Brown was a resident of Sidell Louisiana and evacuated to Texas before the hurricane. He died shortly thereafter.
A documentary film entitled The US vs John Lennon will be released on September 6. As the title suggests, it is about Lennon’s immigration battle with the US. He was seen as a subversive by the Nixon Administration and they used all means and manner to intimidate Lennon and boot him out. Didn’t work.
It’s a melancholy song with an upbeat final verse yet it’s interesting how Billie gives it that third layer of emotion that just breaks your heart while it makes you believe in love all at the same time. And, of course, add Louie into the mix and you’ve got something that moves beyond mere magic…
The Blues are Brewin’
When the moon’s kinda dreamy Starry eyed and dreamy And nights are luscious and long If you’re kinda lonely Then nothin’ but the blues are brewin’ The blues are brewin’
When the wind through the window Blows across your pillow And tells you sleepin’ is wrong If love goes a thirsting Till you feel like bursting Then nothing but the blues are brewin’ The blues are brewin’
Suppose you want somebody But you ain’t got nobody You only get a gleam in your eyes Till somebody’s found you And put their lovin’ arms around you You got the feelin’ you want to die
But when the Lord up above you Send’s someone to love you The blues are something you loose You’re so busy doing The things that you’re doing That love ain’t got no time For brewin’ the blues
A “homegrown” protest is not what it appears to be at all. The cynic in me wonders why they didn’t give this guy a few pointers with the message. The only thing missing was a “Bush is a genius” remark. Truth is, it appears the guys motivation was honest enough, seeing how the White House (and the media parrots that squawk its message) seems to have been caught off guard in assuming that he was another “unpatriotic anti-war thus anti-Democracy Cindy Sheehan liberal” when he was… not. I wonder if he got to sleep in the Lincoln bedroom for his efforts.
Ann Coulter gets caught flat footed and looks around while asking for her Sean Hannity “shut the Liberal up” crutch but ol’ blood and guts blew his wad on the previous liberal guest so Ann had to take her lumps and watch as Seany boy kept his piehole shut lest he appear… overbearing. (spew drink all over keyboard now. ) (c/o Tbogg)
We’re all gonna die! Sure, some day. Just not all of us at the same time on August 22. Or a third of us on September 12, 2006 either. Hey, if I’m wrong, I’ll be the first to admit it, in between screams of agony as my soul is cooked with hell fire of course. I’ll wear my good silk yellow tie so you can find me. Brother Daniel has a rather thoughtful post over at Orthodox Anarchist on hatred. It seems to be a topic of growing concern in the blogsphere these days. The outright hatred and the calls for violence have gotten out of hand.
Case in point, Glenn Greenwald looks at an article by Walter Williams that calls for the nuclear annihilation of certain Middle Eastern civilian populations in order to win the Global War on Terror, War Against Violent Extremism, The Long War. Glenn explains:
Williams points out that we could easily “annihilate” Iran or Syria with nuclear weapons launched from submarines. He then claims that the Great Generation of World War II would have done so already, but laments the tragic fact that we are deterred from doing this by what he calls the “handwringing about the innocent lives lost, so-called collateral damage” [...] Like all lovers of the Western way of life, Williams blames the free press for these threats to our freedoms: “Our adversaries in the Middle East have advantages that the axis powers didn’t have — the Western press and public opinion.” After spilling his nuclear annihilation fantasies out in the open, Williams pays lip service to the idea that we should at least think a little bit before eradicating entire countries — “I’m not suggesting that we rush to use our nuclear capacity to crush states that support terrorism” — but there is little doubt about what he is advocating.
Go read the entire post and then tell me that your monkey tail doesn’t start to twitch.
Some on the right have completely and utterly gone over the edge. No doubt about it. And, the news cycles of Armegeddon talk, which are still out there from time to time, are just absoulutely off the rails.
Speaking of which… I missed the Muslim “doomsday” on August 22. Did the world end? I’ll go to the next one. Just too busy with reality to deal with propaganda ginned up to stoke the fires of fear on our shores, a cocktail all too many are willing to suck down with a side of shit for brains.
Bush: Katrina recovery will take time. Sure, all the money and all the personnel are in Iraq. Speaking of which…
Victory in Iraq = Military Draft. You heard it here first. (Actually, I said it about three years ago on Jakeneck.) But, of course, Bush and Co. figured they could win the war with fear, public relations and money, thus…
Iran is benefiting from the war in Iraq while the major proponent behind that war, the self proclaimed “war president”, has become a major liablility. (c/o Cursor) And, one reason for that (among many) is…
Bush can’t seem to keep his facts or his story straight.
