‘America Is Addicted to Oil’

This sounds downright Liberal:

“America is addicted to oil which is often imported from unstable parts of the world,” Bush is expected to say. Oil prices are inching toward $70 a barrel, throwing a cloud over the economy and pinching Americans’ pocketbooks.

He also will call for increased federal research into alternative fuels such as ethanol made from weeds or wood chips instead of corn.

And he will push for construction of new nuclear power plants, increased use of wind and solar power and clean coal technologies. In each year of his presidency, Bush has called for less dependence on foreign oil sources.

Of course, there are two important caveats – It’s a downright obvious point that any third grader knows and it’s Bush doing the talking.

Words are cheap.

I’d rephrase your second caveat as “any politician doing the talking” since as a longtime professional in the energy field I can tell you there’s precious little wisdom or foresight in elected government regarding energy issues. I’m not sure what our energy future should be, but I think we’ll have a better shot at getting it right if we understand our energy present first.

Those on all sides of the nuclear power issue might be interested in checking out my entertaining profile of the real world of nuclear energy, a techno-thriller novel called “Rad Decision”. The book is available at no cost to readers – and they seem to like it, judging from comments on the website’s homepage. http://RadDecision.blogspot.com

Yup. The age old problem. Where money is to be made, progress will be impaired. Thanks James.
